What is PCS’ IoT product plan?
The IoT market is expected to reach 50 Billion connected devices by 2020. IoT communications will be handled by RF radios using sub-gigahertz transmission resulting in long-range, low power, and mass deployment. New technology standards such as HaLow (802.11ah) for Wi-Fi and LTE Cat NB1 and Cat M for cellular networks could potentially replace the existing IoT network technology, if proven successful. PCS provides RF solutions for both Wi-Fi and cellular network standards.
What is PCS’s view on IoT connectivity and why is it relevant?
The combination of 4G and upgraded hardware in smartphones created a new wave of industries such as mobile gaming and m-commerce. This meant that consumers were no longer tied to a PC and could easily shop, communicate and game using their mobile devices.
4G is being replaced by 5G. 5G is a cellular network operated by traditional carriers such as SmartTone, and Vodafone.
5G connectivity means that our daily connected devices are no longer limited to just smart phones. Connected devices such as nearables and wearables will change the lives of their consumers; even shoes can be implanted with sensor chips that send a runner’s biometric information to the cloud directly without having to be connected to a mobile device. 5G technology will open the door to new commercial and business opportunities.
What are the communication mechanics behind 5G and Wi-Fi?
5G and its communication standards are NB-IoT and Cat-M and will allow for longer distance transmissions, a larger number of connected devices and lower power consumption, resulting in increased battery longevity. All of which are essential to IoT connectivity.
Another major communication mechanic is Wi-Fi, with its latest standard called HaLow (802.11ah). HaLow Wi-Fi’s advantages include ease of set-up, low power usage, and no additional costs for connecting multiple new devices to a network. Wi-Fi also allows for enhanced and customised data encryption, which is particularly important for Industry 4.0 applications.
5G’s public network technology (NB-IoT/Cat-M standards) or private Wi-Fi technology (HaLow) complement each other when serving IoT applications. PCS believes that the majority of the IoT use cases are best suited to cellular or Wi-Fi connectivity as existing technologies like Bluetooth or Zigbee focus on very short distance communications which is not adequate for Industry 4.0.
